TAHOE CITY — The beginning of July also marks the beginning of the summer transportation season in and around the Lake Tahoe Basin, and just like in years past, there are some free options from which to choose.
Starting July 1, the Tahoe Summer Transit Program kicks off, which includes daily Tahoe Area Regional Transit service along the North Shore and on Highway 267 between Crystal Bay and Northstar, as well as the free Tahoe Trolley and Northstar Night Rider.
The Night Trolley runs from 7 p.m. to midnight from Squaw Valley to Incline Village. There will be extra service on the nights of July 3 and July 4, according to a press release from the Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Association, for fireworks in Kings Beach, Squaw Valley and Tahoe City.
Northstar's free Night Rider runs through September 6.
Furthermore, travelers wishing to get to South Shore or Emerald Bay can do so by traveling on TART to Tahoma and transferring to the BlueGo Nifty 50 Trolley, as BlueGo will travel this year for the first time ever to Tahoma.
“Using the Tahoe's Summer Transit Program is a great way to chip in to protect Lake Tahoe's fragile alpine environment,” said Jan Colyer, TMA executive director. “Increased public transit use also decreases traffic congestion, resulting in improved air and water quality.”
The Tahoe Trolley is operated by TART, and the Northstar Free Shuttle is operated by Northstar-at-Tahoe — both are funded by the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association and local business sponsorships.
The South Shore/Emerald Bay connection is funded by the U.S. Forest Service.
