SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The U.S. Forest Service is seeking comments on a proposal to replace its Taylor Creek Education Center to better serve the needs of visitors and provide a safe working environment for staff, according to a statement from the agency.

Under the proposal, the Forest Service would demolish the current building and construct a 3,800-square-foot facility at the existing site.

The new education center would provide a central facility with a staffed information counter, area for issuing wilderness permits, public restrooms, an area for preparing interpretive programs, seasonal staff working space, adequate storage space and an area for small outdoor patio talks.

The existing building was designed as a restroom and storage facility and was never designed to accommodate visitor information and support staff operations, according to the statement.

The new center will incorporate “green” technology to the extent possible and will improve accessibility.
