Incline volleyball | Highlanders upset visiting Dayton

The Incline volleyball team rebounded from a loss in the first set to upset visiting Dayton in four games this past Friday.

The Highlanders (6-4) could not duplicate the effort on Tuesday, however, as they traveled to Pershing County and lost in straight sets.

Against Dayton, after dropping the opening game 13-25, the Highlanders stormed back to win three close sets, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-23.

“The Dayton match was great,” said Incline head coach Tacy Kelly. “The girls played together as team and came out and took care of business.”

Claire Kent finished with 12 kills, four blocks and 21 digs for Incline, while Megan Golden had 17 assists and five digs, Katie Orlady and Michelle Tokunaga each had 11 digs, Kira Porter had six kills and four blocks, Ronnie Flores had four kills and 13 digs, Sophie Shorin had seven aces and 13 digs, and Taylor Binney had two kills.

“I was proud to beat Dayton for the first time since I have been coaching,” Kelly said. “We ended the week with solid win.”

The Dust Devils (16-3) played without their top player, Madison Foley, who sat out with an ankle injury.

The Highlanders did not fare as well against Pershing County, which is off to an 18-1 start to the season (coincidentally, the Mustangs only loss came against Dayton). Incline fell in straight sets, 9-25, 11-25 and 16-25.

“My team didn’t really show up to play,” Kelly said. “The long bus ride always is a challenge for the girls. Pershing is very strong and experienced team.”

Kent tallied seven kills, two blocks and 19 digs, Tokunaga had 10 digs, Orlady seven digs, Flores three kills, Trisha Lincoln two kills, Golden two kills and eight assists, and Christina Cruz one ace.

UP NEXT: Incline is scheduled to play at Silver Stage on Saturday and at Portola on Tuesday. The Highlanders return home to host South Tahoe on Oct. 6.
