Truckee cross country | Flora second at Stanford Invitational

Sophomore Skyler Flora has had many great races in her young career at Truckee High, but none better than her effort this past Saturday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto.

Competing against girls from five different states, Flora finished second overall to help lead her teammates to a solid ninth-place team finish.

Flora got out to a fast start in the race, which included more than 200 competitors. She held a slim 2-second lead halfway through. The race continued to be tight throughout before Stephanie LaFace of Notre Dame-SO (Calif.) pulled away late to score a 5-second win over Flora (18:54).

The rest of the girls team ran as a pack through the first half of the race, which helped propel them to their ninth-place finish.

Ruby Wood (58th, 20:59), Kyla Burrill (77th, 21:12), Hannah Halvorsen (97th, 21:36), Olivia York (105th, 21:46) and Nicole Rathbun (193rd, 25:49) rounded out the Wolverine squad.

On the boys side, freshman Andrew Clusserath ran his most aggressive race of the season to finish 32nd (16:47) overall behind winner Steven Grolle of Sonora Union High (15:46) - and first among all freshmen.

Behind Clusserath were teammates Nathan Ariza (66th, 17:16), Alex Kopytko (129th, 18:01), Nick Morgan (157th, 18:27), Simeon Murphy (176th, 18:59), Colin Deurlington (189th, 19:12) and Noah Oberriter (196th, 19:29). The Truckee boys finished 21st overall as a team.

The teams returned to competition with a rare Tuesday meet at the Reed Invitational. They compete next in the Sparks Invitational at Rancho San Rafael Park - also site of the regional state qualifier - on Friday, Oct. 12.
