Obituary: Gregory Thomas Shanley

March 15, 1950 - Sept. 19, 2012

On Sept.19, 2012 beloved husband, father, son, and brother, Gregory Shanley, passed away after a yearlong fight with brain cancer. He is survived by his wife Barbara, daughters Laurel and Kelly, brother and sister-in-law Patrick and Jan Shanley, parents Fred and Arlie Shanley, and 8 nieces and nephews. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Greg was born in Seattle, Washington on March 15, 1950 then grew up in Los Angeles, where he went to school, played the drums, and was on his high school swim team. Fred and Arlie took the boys on many trips to Yosemite and other national parks, fostering a lifelong love of the outdoors.

Greg enlisted in the Army in 1968 and completed a 1 year combat tour in Viet Nam, where he was an infantryman and sniper. He served the remaining 2 years of his enlistment as a drill sergeant. After discharge from the Army he attended Monterey Peninsula College and UC Santa Cruz for undergraduate school, ending with law school at Hastings School of Law for his Ph. D. Upon graduation, he moved to the Tahoe area for a break and to learn to build his own house.

After a year or so, Greg started his law practice and continued to practice for 33 years. During this time, he and Barbara met in Tahoe and married in 1982, and they have been best friends for 30 years. Greg's great loves were his wife, his girls, and any activity that they could do together.

He enjoyed playing the drums, skiing, backpacking, softball, and watersports and was an avid 49er fan. Over the years Greg coached many girls' soccer and softball teams and is fondly remembered by many of the players. He could also be found on the ski hill helping with Squaw Valley Freestyle competitions and cheering on his daughters.

Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Greg's life which will be held on Oct. 14, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Olympic Village Inn in Squaw Valley. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation would be appreciated as there will be a memorial scholarship set up in his name.
