INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In celebration of this month, Tahoe SAFE Alliance invites residents to join its staff on Saturday, Oct. 13th, at the Oktoberfest at Village Shopping Center in Incline from noon to 5 p.m. To help raise awareness about domestic violence, Tahoe SAFE Alliance will be holding a raffle for Chocolate, Wine, and Roses tickets and other prizes to Oktoberfest attendees.
In order to be entered in the raffle, Oktoberfest attendees will engage in an interactive story simulation intended to give participants a chance to learn about domestic violence through the eyes of a victim.
The activity, which is a modified version of an activity called "In Their Own Words," places participants in the shoes of a character who is involved in an unhealthy, abusive relationship.
Reminiscent of the widely known "Choose Your Own Adventure" stories, participants read their character's scenario and makes choices that determine the course of their story. Those choices will guide them to local businesses throughout the Village Center. It will be an eye-opening experience that will bring awareness and attention to our continued need to work toward maintaining safe, healthy communities in our region.
Tahoe SAFE Alliance has also reached out to the community by partnering with local coffee shops to spread the word about DVAM through the use of customized coffee sleeves. They are available at Java Hut in Kings Beach, Coffee Connexion in Tahoe City, Art's Coffee House and IV Coffee Lab in Incline Village, and Wild Cherries Coffee House in Truckee during the month of October.
Tahoe SAFE Alliance is a non-profit organization established in 1985. Its mission is to reduce the incidence and trauma of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee. For more information, please go to www.tahoesafealliance.org or call 775-298-0010.
