Truckee cross country | Girls edge Division I Spanish Springs

Another fine race by the Wolverines' sophomore standout and a last-ditch effort by its fourth-year veteran propelled the Truckee girls to the overall win by a single point over Spanish Springs in the Reed Invitational on Tuesday.

Sophomore Skyler Flora raced to a first-place individual finish in a field of 58 varsity girls, posting a time of 20:46 over the 5-kilometer course to the runner-up time of 21:07 (an unlisted athlete from Damonte Ranch). Sophomore teammate Gabrielle Rinne, who's been out all season with an injury, also was impressive in her return to competition, finishing fourth overall in a time of 22:11.

Senior Ruby Wood was the difference-maker, however. Wood looked like she was cruising to a comfortable 10th-place finish when she broke into a flat-out sprint the last 25 meters and passed Maddison McHenry of Spanish Springs just before the finish line.

Wood's ninth-place finish proved crucial to the Wolverines' win, as they finished a point ahead of Division I Spanish Springs, 49-50. In fact, the Truckee girls, with two sophomores, two freshmen and a senior recording their top five scores, finished ahead of six Division I teams - Spanish Springs, Damonte Ranch, Manogue, Reed, Douglas and Wooster.

Freshmen Hannah Halvorsen and Kyla Burrill rounded out the Wolverines' top five scores, as Halvorsen was 14th in 23:50 and Burrill 26th in 25:11. Another Truckee freshman, Olivia Yale, was 29th in 25:27, and Skyla Urman was 42nd in 28:54.

Truckee's boys didn't fare badly, either, as they finished third among 12 mostly DI teams, behind Damonte Ranch (58 points) and Spanish Springs (81), with 86 points.

Sophomore Nathan Ariza led the way, racing to a sixth-place finish in 18:43. Cody Forman of Reed won in 17:42.

Following Ariza were freshman teammate Andrew Clusserath in 12th place (19:07), senior Alex Kopytko in 18th (19:27), sophomore in Noah Oberriter 26th (20:09) and junior Simeon Murphy in 33rd (20:41).
