Marine 9 raffle at Oktoberfest for free boat ride

Special to the Bonanza

In conjunction with the Village Center's Oktoberfest, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Patrol and Rescue Vessel, Marine 9, will be on display Saturday, Oct. 13, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Members of the community will be able to meet with volunteer members of Incline Marine Auxiliary and tour the boat. Auxiliary members will be offering a "Ride Along Raffle", which is available for a two-hour family cruise on Marine 9.

There will be a maximum of 250 tickets sold at a price of $10 for a single ticket, and three tickets for $25. Proceeds from this raffle will be used to support Incline Marine Auxiliary's goals of assisting WCSO missions of law enforcement, search and rescue and boater education.

As part of the raffle effort, Marine 9 also will be on display, with tickets available, at the Raley's Center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12.

While Marine 9 is available on the water for training and emergencies on the water year around, most volunteer participation is during the Tahoe boating season.

For the 2011 season, May through Labor Day, IMA volunteers contributed approximately 650 man hours to WCSO actually working on Marine 9. To put those hours in perspective, they are equivalent to 16 full duty weeks for a deputy.

Another way to look at it is one volunteer on Marine 9 six days a week for a six-hour shift for the full season. IMA volunteers are very proud of this contribution to the community and thank the citizens for their support.

If you are interested in contributing to your community and improving your boating skills you may be interested in becoming an Incline Marine Auxiliary member. IMA is looking for additional volunteers who are interested in promoting safe boating, assisting law enforcement and performing as first responders to marine emergencies. IMA provides very comprehensive seamanship and safety training to volunteers.

If you have interest in becoming a volunteer, check the web site Marine9.org or contact Don Morrison at 775-846-0035.
