TAHOE CITY, Calif. - For decades, Tahoe locals and visitors alike have turned to one shop when it comes to office supply and copy needs: The Store ... Copies and More.
The Store originally opened in 1978, next to Safeway, in a large retail space. Back then, it had everything from books and greeting cards to copy and printing services. Current owner, Lisa Adams, began working at the shop in 1998, and has seen it evolve through many transitions.
Starting out as a general clerk, Adams soon was learning the ins and outs of the business, from stocking shelves and setting up displays, to ordering and customer service.
"I learned about all aspects of the business," Adams said. "By the end of the summer, I had a lot more responsibility."
Soon, Adams was climbing the ranks, quickly becoming a manager. Finally, on Jan. 9, 2009, Adams purchased The Store, and moved it to downtown Tahoe City.
"It's been a great move," Adams said. "There are trials and tribulations of bring on the street, but that's the risk you take."
The Store is now located right on North Lake Boulevard, allowing locals and visitors to stop in and grab whatever they might need, including greeting cards, stationary, balloons, notebooks, office supplies and a full service copy shop. Adams explained that passersby often remember they need something, such as paper clips, and stop right in.
"It's a Tahoe-style Kinkos," she said. "It's an office away from home."
Adams describes her copy shop as "top notch," adding that her copiers print out 95 pages a minute. The Store also has a self-service copier, as well as a computer and printer for public use. Further, the shop offers electronic printing and scanning, where the customer can email The Store a document to be printed or copied, or The Store can scan a document and email it to the client.
Adams added that customer service is a big part of her business, as she often takes in customers' requests for new items. For example, Adams explained that customers wanted more greeting cards and wrapping materials, so she ordered more to have in stock. If customers still can't find what they need in the two-million-item store, Adams encourages them to tell her, so she can order whatever product they need.
The Store also invites customers to take Lisa's Challenge, where she will match competitor's prices.
"We are competitive," Adams said of her business.
Adams, who grew up in Tahoe and has lived here for the past 15 years, added that it's important for her to give back to the community. She has been heavily involved in the North Tahoe Boosters Club and Fan Club. While her son has graduated from the North Lake Tahoe school system, she still remains connected to the community by continuing to offer her services at a discount for the high school.
"I want to be a part of (my town)," she added. "I have a lot of pride (in my store). Overall ... I love to provide the services I do."
Be sure to stop by The Store ... Copies and More this fall for all your copy needs. The Store will also be running copy specials throughout the winter, including customer calendars for the new year.
