Letter to the Editor: Still voting 'no' on Measure J

Mr. Bob French's response to Michelle Gartner assumes that the voters are too ignorant to see through his rhetoric, weak arguments and "facts." Michelle, however, is right on.

The Recreation and Park District has repeatedly said that if Measure J passes the Aquatic Center will be constructed "first." A Performing Arts Center is 3-5 years away. Will the district run out of money to build to a Performing Arts Center? A bond will not stop construction costs from going up.

Measure C, the hospital "Bond Doggle," is an example of what we should be concerned about with another bond.

Who are the independent resources to help with costs? Make a commitment right now. Tell us who you are and what you are willing to donate. The Capital Campaign Survey for a Performing Arts Center was a bust. There was not enough interest from potential donors. Why would somebody give us money to operate our facilities? Naming rights?

Mr. French didn't tell you that a handful of entitled folks have donated more than $9,000 in cash and prizes (according to the most recent campaign contribution statement for Truckee First, filed with Placer County elections) to convince us to buy luxuries most of us cannot afford because a few more bucks in taxes won't make a difference to them.

There is no business plan for the Performing Arts Center and no local company to manage it. The District should not be in this business. Furthermore, the consulting firm assumed the Performing Arts Center would be built downtown.

I am not going to tell you how to vote on Measure J. I have a great deal of faith in our Community. I believe we are all intelligent, thinking citizens who can see right through all the rhetoric. We will send a message that we have had enough. No more taxes!

I am voting NO.
