Michael Henry Jenkins moved from Oakland, Calif., where he was born, Nov. 4, 1942, to Kings Beach in 1958 when his parents, Marshie and Jenks purchased the Garden Motel, now the Jenkins Building.
Michael was 17 and began attending Tahoe Truckee High School as a senior. His senior year was cut short by a car accident in Carnelian Bay that left Michael unconscious for over three months. He spent the next three years learning how to talk and walk again while looking out upon the lake from the upper deck of the motel where he walked back and forth holding on to two metal railings. Many old timers in King Beach will recall Mickey in his wheel chair, on crutches and finally with a cane.
After proving he could conquer Tahoe winters he finally decided to spend winters in southern California. Mickey achieved more than most everyone thought he ever would after his car accident and lived to almost see 70 years.
He died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, 2012, in Palm Desert, Calif., after a bout with prostate cancer. His mantra, as always was: "I am whole, perfect, complete and lacking nothing."
