Alpenglow, Alpine Meadows to host 7th Annual Lake Tahoe Backcountry demoAlpenglow Sports has partnered with Alpine Meadows Ski Resort to provide its 7th annual Backcountry Demo Event on Saturday, Jan. 5 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., weather permitting. The event will provide a forum to perpetuate the enthusiasm for all aspects of in-area and backcountry skiing. Free of charge (not including lift ticket), it will showcase the latest and greatest in both telemark and alpine touring equipment. A new component for the biggest AT and telemark demo on the West Coast is an informal avalanche companion rescue techniques class. Taught by Rich Meyer, the companion rescue clinics will include beacon searches, strategic shoveling, and probing, and will last approximately 60 minutes. Registration will be held onsite Jan. 5. Experienced biathlon skiers can gain US Biathlon Association Red Book certification on Jan. 5 and April 21. Skiers must have their own biathlon rifle to become Red Book certified. On Feb. 24, Auburn Ski Club will host the annual 10th Mountain Division Biathlon held in honor of World War II ski troops. Skiers who have participated in the clinics and certifications can put their skills to the test in the competition. The triathlons will consist of three separate exercise segments, to be completed individually at any time throughout the month. Participants' best times for each segment will be recorded and all age-group winners will receive prizes. There will be two distances offered - a sprint (500-yard swim, 10-mile bike, 5-kilometer run) and Olympic (1-mile swim, 25-mile bike, 10K run). Cost is $20 (includes five visits to each facility) or free to members of the pool or track. Participants may use stationary bikes, track or treadmills to complete segments.
