Letter to the Editor: Bob Harris will be sorely missed

On behalf of the Board and staff of the California Tahoe Conservancy, I would like to express my most sincere sadness upon learning of the recent passing of Bob Harris.

Bob served on our board from 1990 to 1996 as the Forest Supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, representing the U.S. Forest Service. During that time his efforts contributed to the authorization of more than $52 million in expenditures for the acquisition of over 900 Conservancy parcels.

His instrumental guidance helped the Conservancy realize projects including the Meyers Visitor Center, Big Meadow Trailhead, and the 1995 updates that transformed the Taylor Creek Visitor Center and its stream profile chamber. The latter project was particularly fitting as Bob had worked on the original project as a young Forest Service engineer in the 1960s.

His leadership in initiating and fostering interagency coalitions such as the Tahoe Re-Green Campaign and the 1997 Presidential Forum brought people together and raised awareness of solutions to create a better community.

After retiring from the Forest Service in 1997, Bob added energy to our office for an additional 16 years through his ongoing involvement and support of the Basins resource planning, protection and management efforts, and through his work with the Tahoe-Baikal Institute.

We will always remember Bob for his wise counsel, his enthusiasm and warmth of character, and his commitment and dedication to the Basin. In addition, Bob made it possible for me to join the Tahoe Baikal journey to Mongolia and Lake Baikal for one of my most enjoyable and exciting journeys to the outside world, thank you Bob! He will be sorely missed.
