Truckee basketball | Girls rout Railroaders, remain perfect in Mount Rose League

The Truckee girls basketball team ran away with a 56-25 Mount Rose League win over visiting Sparks on Saturday, while the boys lost 53-42.

The girls took immediate control with a 20-point first quarter as they cruised to a 27-4 halftime lead. Truckee went on to outscore Sparks in each of the final two quarters en route to the big win.

Jackie Bolton and Kaylee Neill scored 11 points apiece to lead a balanced scoring effort. Katey Hamill scored eight points, Diana Rosas and Sydnie English each had six points, and Olivia Duner and Ashley Harris each scored five.

Lauren Peak finished with eight rebounds and four points while playing solid defense, said coach Geoff Stephens, and Kate Traeger and Karina Nunez contributed solid minutes and hustle.

Cassandra Sawyer, "always the soldier," Stephens said, was sick but gave every ounce of effort she could muster.

"Cass never wants to come out. She is really sick and we will need her on Tuesday against South Tahoe," Stephens said.

The Wolverines held the Railroaders' top scorer, Kyrstal Parker, scoreless in the first half, but she eventually found her mark and finished with 12 points, hitting two 3-pointers.

Truckee improved to 8-0 in Mount Rose League play and 16-7 overall.

Sparks took control early in the boys game, leading 20-6 by the end of the first quarter and 31-14 by half.

The Wolverines bounced back with a better second half, as they scored 14 points to the Railroaders' 15 in the third quarter and outscored the visitors 14-7 in the fourth. But it wasn't enough as Sparks improved to a perfect 7-0 in league play (15-8 overall).

Seniors Adam Morgan and Graham Millie led the Wolverines with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Isaiah Campbell and Keiffer Putman each scored 15 points for Sparks.

Truckee is now 10-11 overall and 3-5 in league.

UP NEXT: Truckee will host North Tahoe to end the regular season on Friday, girls at 6 p.m. and boys at 7:30.
