Open house scheduled for Kings Beach three-lane project

KINGS BEACH, Calif. - With construction on the long-awaited three-lane project set to break ground this summer, a community open house on the $48 million endeavor is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the North Tahoe Event Center.

The open house from 5:30-8 p.m. will include schedules, maps, exhibits, graphics and an opportunity for one-on-one discussions with design and construction representatives, according to a press release.

Specific topics expected to be covered include: final design details; project funding and scope; 2013 schedule; right-of-way acquisition; parking replacement plan; and traffic management plan in community's neighborhood known as The Grid.

The project - dubbed the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project - is designed to upgrade a 1.1-mile section of Highway 28 through downtown.

It will reconfigure the stretch of highway into a three-lane roadway with two roundabouts, and sidewalks, bike lanes and other streetscape features will be constructed. Seasonal on-street parking will be built, and additional parking will be provided in lots that either already exist or will be constructed along the highway.

Further, in the grid of streets above the highway, about a mile of sidewalk will be installed to further improve safety and pedestrian access to the commercial core, according to the project. So far, about third of the planned traffic management features - including mini roundabouts and speed bumps - in an effort to cut down on drivers bypassing the highway have already been installed in The Grid.

The project is expected to take about two construction seasons to complete, with working happening between May and October of each year.
