When it comes right down to it, Kyle Jones' dream is no different that the one "Rudy" acted on decades ago when he walked on at Notre Dame.

Jones, like "Rudy," wasn't a star football player in high school. But the South Tahoe High senior has entertained a dream of playing for the University of Hawaii since he was in middle school and he's not about to proceed with his life without acting on it.

"Ever since I was 12 years old I watched UH play football," Jones said on Saturday after pitching South Tahoe to victory in the second game of a doubleheader with Hug. "They changed their uniforms, they changed their attitude when June Jones came over there. The tradition that they have is just real big and I've always wanted to be a part of it."

June gave Kyle the OK to try out for the Rainbow Warriors after the former Viking linebacker visited the campus during spring break.

The visit only intensified Kyle's desire to play for Hawaii.

"When I was over there, everyone knows who plays football for UH and there's a lot of fan support," Kyle said. "Everybody knows everybody, even the guys who don't even suit up."

Kyle was a tailback and linebacker for the Vikings last fall. He earned Northern Nevada 4A League Sierra Division honorable mention for his play at linebacker.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pounder is intent on trying out at strong safety or possibly slot receiver. Kyle's baseball coach, Matt Tillson, supports his player's dream.

"He's a good athlete and he's a good kid, too, so hopefully he does it," Tillson said.

Former Atlanta Falcons coach Jerry Glanville recently was hired as the Rainbow Warriors' defensive coordinator. Hawaii will open the season against two-time defending national champion USC at Aloha Stadium and must replace 13 starters, including NCAA record-setting quarterback Timmy Chang and All-American receiver/return man Chad Owens.

A year ago, Hawaii (8-5) defeated Northwestern and Michigan State of the Big Ten and outscored Alabama-Birmingham 59-40 to win the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

Last season, Hawai`i finished 8-5 overall and earned a trip to the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl. The season featured one of the best finishes in UH football history, as the team won three straight, including back-to-back victories against Big Ten opponents Northwestern (49-41) and Michigan State (41-38). The Warriors capped the season with a 59-40 win over UAB in the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl on Christmas Eve. It was the program's six bowl game and fourth under Jones.

I talked to the football coach and he's going to let me try out this spring. I'm looking forward to doing that and playing defensive for them hopefully.
