Zoo co-founders Dale McDaniel and Jimmie Martin contemplate more than 16 years of watching their dream, Sierra Safari Zoo, grow to prominence as Nevada's largest zoo. The proud "fathers" say Northern Nevada has been good to the zoo.
"We had great success with our Winter Feed Drive last year and did some much-needed improvements this year with our thanks to the Neighborhood Area Boards. We are again in hopes that the zoo fits in the budgets of local business and the community," McDaniel said. "Last winter the community came up with the necessary donations to get the zoo through its winter feeding time."
"We are also available to provide animals for guest appearances at parties and special events during our off season. This can give some added value to donations as well," Martin said.
The nonprofit Sierra Safari Zoo, under the direction of the Sierra Nevada Zoological Society, faces the months it is closed, from November through March, without admissions or other income.
"It's that time of the year when we appeal to the community to help us get through the winter by making heartfelt donations. With nearly 200 animals to feed, we're challenged with feed costs of nearly $50,000 for the next four months," said Lori Acordagoitia, zoo general manager.
Although the zoo is primarily staffed with volunteers, gate receipts and income from the gift shop during the months it is open usually are enough to sustain the zoo and its residents during those months only.
"Gift of Life" adoption donations are easily made: Participants adopt the animal of their choice, with information available at (775) 677-1104 and at www.SierraSafariZoo.com.
Regular donations may be sent to Sierra Safari Zoo, 10200 North Virginia St., Reno, NV 89506. Credit card donations may also be called in at (775) 677-1104 or made through the zoo's Web site.
More than 200 animals of 40 different species are available for viewing and in many cases for feeding and petting from April through October. The zoo is 8 miles north of Reno in the picturesque North Valley area at the base of Peavine Mountain, at 10200 North Virginia St. The zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from April through October.
