Belligerent snowboarder pours beer on ski schoolers, fights with patroller

A man pouring beer onto the South Shore Ski and Snowboard Camp from the Canyon chair lift at Heavenly Mountain resort allegedly struck a ski patroller with his snowboard, leaving a 2-inch crease on the patroller's helmet, a Douglas County sheriff's deputy reported.

After he got off the chair lift, the 27-year-old man got into an argument with a group of people in the clinic about the run being closed, the deputy reported. During the argument a scuffle ensued, and the man snowboarded down a run with a ski patroller in pursuit, the deputy reported.

The two had a confrontation near the Boulder Lodge when the man attempted to leave and the 54-year-old ski patroller said he had the right to revoke the man's pass and ban him for life on the mountain, the deputy reported.

At that time the man swung his snowboard at the ski patroller's head, leaving the crease and knocking the patroller to his knees, the deputy reported.

The man then jumped a guardrail, tumbled 75 feet into a ravine and fled.

"I believe if (the ski patroller) was not wearing a helmet he would have sustained a serious head injury," the deputy stated in a report.

After the March 21 incident the deputy requested a warrant be issued for the man's arrest on a charge of battery with a deadly weapon. A representative with the Douglas County District Attorney's office said the file has been received and the warrant pending pursuant to a case review.

In other news:

-- A 25-year-old San Jose piano teacher was arrested on suspicion of vandalism and possession of a dangerous weapon when he struck the side of a Chevy truck, a South Lake Tahoe police officer said.

Lt. Terry Daniels said the man and a female friend drove from the Bay Area in separate vehicles to confront a person the female said sexually assaulted her.

After a meeting at Denny's Restaurant, the piano teacher followed the suspected sexual assaulter with the woman trailing behind, Daniels said.

While in the area of North Upper Truckee Road, a Chevy truck with flashing high beams began tailgating the piano teacher, who stopped and exited his vehicle with a metal pipe with duct tape at one end, Daniels said.

While the Chevy, driven by the alleged sexual assaulter's girlfriend, was fleeing the scene, the armed piano teacher struck the side of the truck, causing an estimated $600 in damage, Daniels said.

-- An intoxicated 21-year-old from Costa Mesa threw a beer bottle at a video slot machine at Caesars Tahoe in the early hours of March 28, a Douglas County sheriff's deputy reported.

The bottle shattered the touch-screen glass. The man told authorities he would pay for the damage, estimated between $1,500 and $2,500 but if the screen under the glass needed to be replaced the damage would exceed $5,000, authorities reported.

The man was taken into custody on a destruction of property charge.
