Enforcement of a California fire code on sprinkler systems and the location of hydrants for new construction projects has phones at Lake Valley Fire Protection ringing with more frequency.
The code states new developments should include a sprinkler system or improve the "water system's infrastructure" if a fire hydrant is not within 250 feet on a through street.
Financial obligations of installing such improvements fall on the developer, which fall on the homeowner.
"It goes with California Fire Code," said Chief Jeff Michael. "It's a life safety issue that we're dealing with."
In March 2005 the district adopted an ordinance which embraced the 2001 edition of the California fire code, according to Battalion Chief Gareth Harris.
On Feb. 1, the department began reviewing building projects.
