Patient shoots doctor, kills self at medical office in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 74-year-old man who shot his physician and killed himself in a medical office examination room had notes in his pockets complaining about Nevada doctors, police said.

Dr. Avi Abraham Ostrowsky, a 55-year-old endocrinologist, was recovering Tuesday from gunshot wounds to the shoulders and a graze wound to the neck, authorities said.

The gunman, whose name was not immediately released, killed himself before police arrived at a fourth-floor examination room at a medical complex adjacent to Mountainview Hospital in northwest Las Vegas, officials said.

Police Lt. Lew Roberts described the contents of two suicide notes in the man's pockets as complaints about "bad doctors in Nevada."

The man had an appointment to see Ostrowsky, who specializes in internal medicine and diabetes treatment, said Karen Decker, an administrator at the office where the shooting occurred.

Authorities said they did not know what the man was being treated for.

Decker said she heard six shots and saw Ostrowsky come out of the examination room bleeding and holding his right side. A patient in an adjacent examination room was not hurt. Several fourth floor offices were closed while police investigated the shooting, but the rest of the building and the hospital remained open.

Roberts said the gunman was a widower and a patient of Ostrowsky. Police didn't immediately know the date or circumstances of the man's wife's death.

Ostrowsky is from Israel and has been licensed to practice medicine in Nevada since 1992, according to the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners.

He was reprimanded in 2002 and fined $5,000 plus about $3,142 for administrative and investigative costs for failure to respond to a board investigation of a patient complaint alleging billing for services not rendered, the board said.
