After a dry spell, Truckee will once again have a microbrewery in town.
Owners Andy and Alicia Barr are one step closer to their dream of opening a brewery and restaurant after Wednesday night's Town of Truckee Planning Commission meeting, where the Truckee Craft Brewing Company's permits were approved. The brewpub will be in Ponderosa Village off of Brockway Road, opening sometime around December.
"Truckee needed a place like this," Alicia Barr said. "We've always loved Truckee and had a place up here a long time, and we wanted to make it a permanent home."
The permits allow the couple to operate a microbrewery and serve alcohol other than beer and wine, but they still have a few more hurdles to clear before opening, which they expect to happen around Christmas, Andy Barr said.
"We still need a final OK for the [Alcoholic Beverage Control] license, and for building permits, but we don't expect any issues," he said
The Barrs have big plans for Truckee Craft Brewing Co., from creating a enjoyable eating experience to brewing a unique and broad range of beers.
"We're going to serve upscale pub food. People will be able to get the normal beer and a burger or beer and appetizers, but it will also be a place to go out to dinner," Andy Barr said. "We are going to do a lot of work to pair beer in food, and use beer as ingredients in the food."
The couple, formerly of Roseville where they were engineers at Hewlett-Packard, said they also plan on being involved in all the aspects of both the restaurant and brewery.
"We've been home-brewers and done lots of work in the kitchen, so we love it," Andy Barr said.
The Barrs also plan on doing community events to expose locals to the world of beer. They are interested in developing beer in the way that the wine industry has progressed over the last few years.
"We will be doing beer education nights and brewmaster dinners," Alicia Barr said.
The restaurant will include a bar and an outdoor seating area, and may occasionally have live entertainment from local bands. They also have plans to distribute their brew through a wholesaler.
The Barrs will start interviewing for kitchen, bar, and serving staff in September. For more information, contact Andy at 386-6665.
