When the South Tahoe Alpine ski team turned off Highway 89 toward Alpine Meadows on Thursday morning, the rain had turned to snow, promising slower than usual conditions. By the end of the day, more than a foot had fallen at the North Shore resort, site of the opening Tahoe Basin Ski League race of the season.
While the skiers enjoyed some fresh powder between races, it was Truckee who established itself as the new league power after winning both the girls' and boys' giant slalom races. In the boys' race, the Wolverines claimed the first, second, third and fifth spots, and their 184 points was two points off the perfect score of 186.
Truckee's girls were equally impressive, finishing with 167 points and ahead of North Tahoe, Douglas, Incline, Whittell and South Tahoe. It was the exact order of teams for the boys' race.
"What I saw today out of Truckee was reminiscent of South Tahoe five years ago," said STHS assistant coach Mike Shreve. "We dominated everything, then it went from us to North Tahoe the last four years. Now it looks like Truckee will be that team for years to come."
The Vikings had only four competitors on Thursday, all of them freshmen.
Erich Baumann finished 17th overall and Jake Daum placed 22nd. Ashley Kileen was No. 2 after the first giant slalom run, but lost a ski on the second run when it was obvious she would've placed among the top five. Melissa Ewing finished 26th.
"All four were in race suits and were excited to be out there," Shreve said. "Ashley was skiing really well in that second run. They demonstrated what team spirit is, regardless of the size of our team. We're still waiting on paperwork from a lot of people so we can have a complete team."
The next league race is Wednesday at Heavenly. The Douglas-hosted race was originally scheduled for Kirkwood, but the school found a better arrangement at Heavenly.
No details of the Whittell skiers' results were available at press time.
