Mountain climber's backpack stolen

A backpack full of mountaineering equipment was reportedly stolen when the owner ditched the backpack on the side of Highway 89 to make a walk easier to his car parked at Mount Tallac parking lot, an El Dorado County sheriff's deputy said.

The man and a friend were mountaineering at Mount Tallac on Saturday but came out at the Spring Creek tract along Highway 89, the deputy reported.

The man left the backpack on the side of the road and walked to the car. When he returned, the backpack and all its contents were missing.

The deputy listed the items, more than $1,000 worth, in a report. The items included the $250 blue Wind River backpack, a North Face sleeping bag, $150 camp stove, avalanche gear and a $600 pair of Black Diamond telemark skis.

Anyone with information on the missing backpack can contact the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department at (530) 573-3000.
