Welsh-born painter Shelley Hocknell, having moved from the bustling London art gallery scene to unwind, explore and paint in North America, will be featured at Art for the Home Gallery at Ski Run Marina. The opening reception with the artist will take place Thursday, June 21 from 6-9 p.m with refreshments and a wine tasting featuring assorted wines by Laura Zahtila Vineyards. Parking is free.
The show will encompass a wide range of oil, watercolor and charcoal paintings from Hocknell's "New Life: Journeys through America" series. Included will be her new vineyard paintings of the Twisted Oak Winery in Calaveras County, ranging from intense charcoal studies to deeply colored oils. The show will also feature many scenes that pay homage to the rich gold light of California such as her original oil of a Death Valley raven breathing heavily against a golden desert background, her oils and watercolors of swimming Kokanee salmon, and her large pastel of a gardener in wader boots arranging water lilies in a Bishop garden pond.
Hocknell studied at Bristol University, where she received a bachelor's degree in art and visual culture. During her first year at university, she had her first solo exhibition, titled "The Leap of Faith." It was hailed by the British magazine 'Venue' as "the early work of a significant artist." Between 1995 and 2005 she participated in more than 30 exhibitions in the UK, including sites like the Museum of Modern Art in Wales, the Gascoigne Gallery in Yorkshire, the Coningsby Gallery in London and The Brewery Arts Centre, in Kendal -- the latter for the International Mountaineering Film Festival in 2000.
Gallery owners Janette Dean and Sean Haggerty specifically feature art by regional artists and also show regional scenes painted by national and international artists visiting or living in the area. Dean explained, "Because the Sierra Nevada region and Lake Tahoe are so beautiful and inspiring to artists throughout California and the world over, we are able to offer the work of exceptionally talented and trained artists that make our regional art truly world-class art. Plus our clientele enjoy seeing the various ways artists interpret the area's natural beauty in their own unique styles." Haggerty added, "There's always something new to see at our gallery. Our local collectors tend to visit every few weeks and our national clients visit every time they're in town."
Located at Ski Run Marina with spectacular lake views, Art for the Home art gallery offers fine art including oil paintings, watercolors, and photography depicting the beauty of Lake Tahoe and other natural landscapes. The gallery also exhibits still lifes, nudes, bronze sculpture, glass art, hand-turned pottery, wildlife art and hand-carved furnishings. Free validated parking in the daytime is available in the main Ski Run Marina parking lot and also one block north across Highway 50 in the parking lot at the southwest corner of Ski Run Blvd. and Osgood Avenue.
