Burns withdraws from college board race

The field of candidates for two seats in the Lake Tahoe Community College District Board of Trustees election is down to three with the withdrawal of William M. Burns from the race.

Burns, a challenger in the election, announced his withdrawal at the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe debate on Sept. 26. After the retirement of Lake Tahoe Community College President Guy Lease, Burns said he thought the district would be at a disadvantage if he were to run. According to research from the Community College League of California and other organizations, it's harder to find a replacement for the president when the board isn't filled with longtime members.

Burns said he wants the college to have stability so he withdrew from the race in order to give the college the best opportunity for hiring Lease's replacement.

Incumbents Kenneth Rollston and Frederick "Fritz" Wenck are still running, along with challenger Karen M. Borges in the Nov. 6 election.
