Register today for youth ski league

Two dates have been scheduled for Buddy Werner Youth Ski League registration. The first will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today and the second from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Both are at the South Tahoe Ice Arena, 1176 Rufus Allen Blvd.

The Buddy Werner program is entering its 28th year promoting the physical and mental development of youths ages 7 to 14 through slalom skiing. Unlike sports where adults sit on the sidelines cheering on their children, skiing provides an opportunity for parents to exercise alongside their children.

Buddy Werner is run by volunteers. Parents whose children participate are required to volunteer time to the league. This system allows Buddy Werner to keep its registration fees low and provide a scholarship program for families who are unable to meet program costs.

It is not necessary to be a parent to volunteer. Many former Buddy Werner skiers now racing at the high school level are volunteers.

Buddy Werner Youth Ski League practices and races at Sierra-at-Tahoe from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. almost every Sunday from December through March.

The program provides developmental and race teams, depending on skier ability. Skiers must have basic ski skills to join. They need to know how to stop, turn and get on and off the ski lift by themselves.
