The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District will present a modified version of a sprinkler ordinance to Douglas County commissioners on Thursday.
In January, officials from the fire district came before the commissioners with a proposed ordinance requiring the installation of automatic fire sprinkler systems when expanding buildings.
The ordinance would have required building owners to install automatic fire-sprinkler systems when the total floor area of a structure was increased by 25 percent or 500 square feet, whichever was less.
A group of real-estate agents, contractors, building officials and firefighters have since met to discuss the wording of the proposed ordinance. The language of it has been changed and now will require installation of sprinkler systems when a home increases above 3,600 square feet or by 50 percent, according to Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Guy LeFever.
Expansions to homes larger than 3,600 square feet would require the installation of automatic sprinkler systems regardless of the size of the expansion, LeFever said.
Language in the ordinance proposed in January regarding porches, covered walkways, garages and decks also has been removed, LeFever added.
The commission meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Tahoe Transportation Center, 169 Highway 50 in Stateline.
