Tahoe author-earthquake sensitive Cal Orey wasn't that surprised Thursday when the 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Wells, Nev.
After all, in early February she predicted a 3.5-5.0+ magnitude earthquake would happen at Lake Tahoe-Reno. And this earthquake was felt in Reno, Sparks and even Truckee.
Orey, who penned "The Man Who Predicts Earthquakes: Jim Berkland, Maverick Geologist" from Sentient Publications, believes the total lunar eclipse Wednesday may indeed have played a hand in the strong earthquake with countless aftershocks.
What's more, Orey believes the Sierra snowfall this year could trigger a quake at Lake Tahoe-Reno/Mammoth Lakes Region.
"The snowpack is more than I have witnessed in the eight years I've lived at South Lake Tahoe. I sense it is going to give this potential overdue Sierra quake a nudge to happen," she said.
Geologist Jim Berkland of Glen Ellen agrees that heavy snowpack can trigger quakes. He recalls the 1952 record Sierra snowpack. When that snowfall melted and flowed down into San Joaquin Valley, filled reservoirs, and flooded streams, it setup the perfect earthquake. "On the day of the new moon, July 21, 1952, we had the strongest quake in California since 1906," he said. The Kern County 7.5 earthquake was felt as far as Reno.
"It's the rain, snow, and even ice that creates the change in loading on the Earth's crust," added Berkland. It's like a slower tidal effect, he explained, which can cause the Earth to shake.
Both Orey and Berkland believe Thursday's earthquake in Wells teamed with more snowfall on the way could certainly trigger an oncoming shaker in the Sierra.
Orey added, "I monitor my two Brittanys and cat. All three companion animals have proven seismically sensitive. In fact, I posted on my Web site that my dogs Simon and Seth were unruly five days before January 28, when the 3.2 quake hit Incline Village-Crystal Bay."
