Even with a third-place finish on Tuesday, the South Tahoe High boys' golf team lost ground in its quest to qualify for the regional tournament.
Fifth-place Reno trimmed the Vikings' lead to one point in the race for fourth place in the Sierra Division. South Tahoe, however, pulled within a point of third-place Damonte Ranch after the Mustangs placed fifth on Tuesday.
Only one division tournament remains - next Tuesday at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City. Carson leads the division with 36 points, followed by Douglas with 29, Damonte (26), STHS (25) and Reno (24).
"Anything could happen from second through fifth since we're all closer together," said STHS coach Mike Patterson. "Next Tuesday will be a big tournament for everybody, which is how it should be coming into the last match of the year."
Team scores at Wild Creek were Carson 388, Reno 425, STHS 436, Douglas 444, Damonte 452, Wooster 466, North Valleys 472 and Hug 579.
STHS senior Kyle Mazzoni continued his consistently good play by tying for second place with a 4-over 76.
"He's still kicking himself. He three-putted the last green for a bogey, or he could have had second to himself," Patterson said.
Zack Rispin of Carson was the low scorer with a 2-under 70.
Chad Cooney was the only other Viking to break 90 - he shot 85. STHS's other scores were Trevor Borek 91, Eric Cianci 91 and Kyle Garrett 93. Korey Mazzoni's 94 didn't figure in the team score.
The Vikings will get to preview Silver Oak in the first round of the Carson Invitational. The two-day tournament will conclude Thursday at Eagle Valley West Course.
Warriors make it two straight vs. Bulldogs
Marissa Besson went 3 for 5 with a double and a triple, while Austyn Harrington went 3 for 3 and struck out six batters in the Whittell softball team's 19-7 nonleague victory over Smith Valley on Tuesday at Lampe Park in Gardnerville.
Abby Kingman went 2 for 2 for the Warriors, who beat Smith Valley 16-4 last Wednesday in Smith Valley. Whittell, which has won three straight, went ahead 12-4 in the third inning and never looked back.
The Warriors (8-13) host Silver Stage in a Northern 2A doubleheader on Saturday at Lampe Park. The first game is scheduled for noon.
Fourteen hits not enough for WHS
On most days, 14 hits would be enough to win a prep baseball game.
That wasn't the case for Whittell High on Tuesday as 12 errors did in the Warriors in a 10-9 nonleague defeat to Smith Valley in Gardnerville.
"We're not that experienced making plays in the field," said Whittell coach Don Amaral.
Only two of Smith Valley's runs were earned.
Despite the Warriors' troubles in the field, they had chances to pull out the victory. Whittell had the bags loaded in the fifth with their 4-5-6 hitters coming to the plate, but all three Warriors looked at a third strike.
Whittell's final chance to tie the game came in the seventh inning, but a groundout left a runner stranded at second base.
Alex Vogt led Whittell by going 4 for 5. Ben Ward added three hits, and Sam Harris and Nick Warner contributed two apiece.
Whittell (7-15 overall) will play a nonleague game against the Douglas JV at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Minden. The Warriors will resume Northern 2A League play Saturday with a doubleheader against Silver Stage at Lampe Park.
