Welcome to the 2008 fishing season

Tahoe rivers and streams closed until July 1, but action to start elsewhere By Doug Busey Tribune fishing writer

Hello, fellow anglers. Welcome to the 2008 opening of fishing season. Mike Alger from Channel 2 news in Reno has predicted a great weekend for us all.

In talking with Todd at the Carson River Resort, the rivers look great. Nighttime temperatures have been in the 20s, keeping snow melt at a minimum.

The California Department of Fish and Game already has planted both forks of the Carson River and Silver Creek with rainbow trout ranging 9-to-16 inches. Also, the Alpine County fish commission will be doing the usual plant of 2- to 10-pound rainbow trout. These places are the east and west Carson rivers, Markleeville Creek and Silver Creek.

Just a reminder, the rivers and streams that flow into Lake Tahoe are closed until July 1. This would include the south end of Lake Tahoe, the Upper Truckee, Taylor Creek and Trout Creek.

Speaking of special regulations, the east fork of the Carson River from Hangman's Bridge to the Nevada state line is open to catch and release with artificial lures and flies only and barbless hooks. Most anglers fancy the east Carson for big fish and the beauty of the canyon.

Like every year, the Naw will be at the Carson River Resort, but with one change. I will not be at the river cabin this year, so please do not wake those people at 5 a.m. In fact, my wife and I will be on the RV grounds at the resort.

In talking to Todd and Chad at the resort, they have put a new coat of paint on the place and have things stocked up for the weekend. If you need reservations, call them at (877) 694-2229 or you can go on their Web site at www.carsonriverresort.com.

Please drive safely as there will be a lot of anglers walking the roads and moving from one hole to the next. Hope to see you there on the waters. It is about time the weather cooperated with us.

Don't forget your cameras to take that special picture of your outing. If you do get a picture, drop it off at the Tahoe Daily Tribune or you can e-mail it to syingling@tahoedailytribune.com.

You can be in the Naw Hall of Fame. If you have any questions in our fishing world call the Naw-line at (775) 267-9722.

Good fishin' and tight lines.
