Spelling bee team takes first place

The Bijou Community School fifth-grade spelling bee team won first place at the recent 28th annual Kiwanis Spelling Bee in the St. Theresa School multipurpose room. Each team member received a trophy, and the team qualified to compete in the El Dorado County spelling bee.

Team members are Celina Robinson, Aaron Pfister, Adriana Aguilar, Steven Gerling, Vanessa Ruiz, Ana Rea, Daniel Lizaola and Melissa Kruger. Bijou teachers Bob Hickman and Brenda Orique are the coaches.

The contest is open to all South Shore fifth-graders. Participants perfect spelling skills, enhance their vocabulary, train in team building and learn how to compete under pressure.
