Story time at library branch
The South Lake Tahoe Branch Library's Preschool Story Time is at 11 a.m. every Friday and Saturday.

This weekend, the preschool story times will celebrate Mother's Day with games, crafts and stories about moms. There also will be refreshments.

Smokey Bear and a Forest Service representative will visit the preschool story time May 16. Smokey and his friend will explain how to prevent forest fires in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Saturday Family Story Time on May 17 will feature stories about community workers such as doctors and teachers.

These free programs are designed for children ages 3 to 5 and include stories, crafts, feltboard stories, hand plays and more. The South Lake Tahoe Branch Library is at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. For more information, call (530) 573-3185.


Make appointment for free health check
Barton's free Quarterly Health Check is scheduled from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Barton University. There is no cost, but you must preregister.

Health checks will include skin-cancer screening, screening for varicose and spider veins, body composition screening, an orthopedic screening, physical therapy screening and a sign-up booth for a $45 EKG.

AARP potluck and meeting next week
AARP Chapter 2617 will conduct a potluck and meeting at 5:30 p.m. May 16 at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd. New members always are welcome.

Participants should bring a potluck dish to share and their own place settings. The chapter will furnish lasagna.

Anita Poole of the El Dorado Area Agency on Aging will discuss the senior health education program.
