Todd Glass, Bobby Miyamoto to crack up audiences this week at The Improv

The last time Todd Glass was here he was about five years ago. At the time, he was a feature, or what we call the middle act.

I mean, he did some headline shows, but up here he had only featured. Most middle acts up here headline everywhere else because it is a tough room to get into. He’s always been very funny — he just needed others to see that as well.

I mean, he has worked with some pretty impressive entertainers over the years. He is on the road performing nationally with comedian-actor David Spade and made his move to the big screen, starring in indie films “Save the Mavericks” and “Cook off!” Things really picked up for him, though, after appearing as house finalists in the successful seasons of the NBC reality series “Last Comic Standing 2” and “Last Comic Standing 3: Battle of the Best.”

He’s done plenty of television work, including performances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” “Showbiz Show with David Spade,” “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and “Politically Incorrect.” Todd also made guest appearances on HBO’s “Mr. Show” and has become a fixture on Comedy Central, headlining his own half-hour standup special, “Comedy Central Presents: Todd Glass” and appearing on “The Sarah Silverman Show.”

Todd has opened for a bunch of musical acts over the years, including Patti LaBelle, The Temptations, George Benson, Luther Vandross, Gladys Night & the Pips, and a bunch others.

“That was a long time ago,” Glass said. “Those audiences were actually very good, very receptive. There were some rock bands, I don’t even remember who they were, that were a little much. I wouldn’t do that anymore. I don’t want to perform for people who don’t want to see me. That’s a good rule. You don’t want to be in a situation where you’re being thrown upon a disinterested audience.”

However, Todd loved being the opening act for Black and Tenacious D earning high praise from Black himself: “I covet his ----ing brain!” That is quite the testimonial from Jack Black, folks.

Todd co-created, was co-executive producer and starred in “Todd’s Coma,” a pilot Adam Sandler and his company, Happy Madison, produced for TBS. The much-praised, slightly twisted show (in which Todd’s family conducts interviews with visiting celebrities while he lies in a coma) attracted such celebrity guests as Ben Stiller, Fred Willard, Herb Alpert, Ray Romano and even Gene Simmons of Kiss.

He’s also created the television pilots “Todd Glass Saves America” and “Dr. Todd.”
Like most quick thinkers, Todd finds stupid people a drag at times, especially those with closed minds.

“It bugs me when people say to other people that they’re going to burn in hell,” Todd said. “There’s no reason to threaten me or anyone else with hell because having to endure the sewage that’s spewing out of your mouth is hell itself.”

Bobby “in the middle” Miyamoto
Bobby “in the middle” Miyamoto was here just one time before and apparently wanted to return sometime before 2009, but as luck would have it, he was able to return this week instead.

Bobby was raised in Boise, Idaho, but was able to attend Arizona State University, where he says, “I partied a lot and developed an offbeat sense of humor. Now I travel all over the country and perform for all types of crowds, mainly drunk ones.”
He was destined to become a stand-up in part because his face turns really red when he drinks any kind of alcohol.

Bobby has a unique heritage as well: “My dad’s side of the family is Japanese — they all live in Hawaii. The other half is still here in the continental United States.

His comedy so far has landed him stints on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend,” “Comics Unleashed,” “Red Eye” on Fox News, the Comedy Factory in Holland, Asia Street Comedy, Comedy Zen, the A-List, “Animal Planet” and the “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” in which he’ll be reappearing on soon.

There is no exact formula to his stand-up, and in fact, when asked about his comedy and what it’s all about, Bobby said, “Basically I try to think of funny stuff and then say it on stage. I wish I was deeper than that.”
