South Lake Tahoe's windless conditions may be helping golfers stay accurate this week at the American Century Championship, but the stagnant air is doing little to disperse the area's trapped smoke.
According to Gina McGuire, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno, the main culprits are the American River Complex and Butte fires, centered about 50 to 100 miles northeast of Sacramento.
The fires, which are among more than 300 active California fires that have burned about 675,000 acres, will continue to pump smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin, McGuire said Thursday. The area's wind patterns in the foreseeable future aren't likely to clear the air, McGuire added.
"There's really no end in sight until the fires are extinguished," she explained.
