Bears in the woods
It was front page news, above the fold, in the Tahoe Daily Tribune in 1972: Bear rips through neighborhood.
“It happens 40 times a day now, and no one blinks an eye,” said Ann Bryant, BEAR League executive director. “It wouldn’t be on the front page now.”
But it was front-page worthy then, so what’s changed?
When the BEAR League started 10 years ago, they only received one to 10 calls a day. Now they receive 100 calls a day, Bryant said. The league, based in Homewood, promotes peaceful coexistence between humans and bears.
Thousands betting on casino jobs
Red Hawk Casino on the Shingle Springs Rancheria has officially begun hiring for 1,750 jobs — the most available by any private employer in El Dorado County.
Some 150 applicants walked into the casino’s employment center in El Dorado Hills last week; another 3,500 completed job applications online. Casino General Manager Peter Fordham said they expect 15,000 to 20,000 applications before the casino opens late this year.
The hirings have South Shore casinos readying themselves for the grand opening and its impact on the area’s economy.
