The Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation will roll out a new format for its signature fundraising event Saturday, July 19.
Rhythms and Wine will take place outdoors, in the college’s entrance courtyard.
Guests can enjoy appetizers from local food purveyors and specialty wines from Amador Vintners and El Dorado Winery associations as well as Picchetti Winery throughout the afternoon.
Guests also have the chance to meet the college’s new president, Dr. Paul Killpatrick. Proceeds benefit Lake Tahoe Community College through the foundation’s annual fund.
Along with food and wine, the event will feature performances by high-energy drum and dance troupe Java Djembe, the award-winning dance group Jaouahir Tahoe and flamenco dancing.
Java Djembe, the brainchild of LTCC instructor Liz Broscoe, performs traditional West African rhythms. In 2006, Broscoe, the creator of Drumchik Productions, brought drumming and dance workshops to more than 8,500 children throughout California and Nevada through a Nevada Arts Council and the Tahoe Arts Project grant. Her show, “Durga, Goddess of the Drum” recently premiered at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.
Namira, the artistic director and choreographer for Jaouahir Tahoe, appears on several DVDs and teaches several styles of dance at the college.
Nancy McGuinness will perform flamenco dancing throughout the event. The instructor of flamenco, Afro-Cuban and salsa rueda dancing is a native of Havana and began her dancing career at the age of 3.
“Rhythms and Wine” begins at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 19. Tickets are $60 per guest ($40 tax-deductible) and are available by contacting the LTCC Foundation at (530) 541-4660, ext. 344.
