Schools out for summer, so its time for Ed and the Educators to put away their pencils and books and bring out the guitars, drums and amps.
The band of teachers from Stocktons Lincoln High School plays three shows in Tahoe this week.
Advanced studies in rock n roll will be in session from 2-6 p.m.Thursday, July 24, at the Beacon; 10 p.m. Friday, July 25 at Rojos Tavern; and at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Pastime in downtown Truckee.
Ed and the Educators have more than 50 songs from which to choose. They debuted at Tahoe with two shows last summer.
It started five years ago, when they had a battle of the bands at my high school, said lead singer Ed Bonilla. I was in a punk band at the time called Nice Tries. I knew that some of my friends at other schools were into music, so I sent out an e-mail asking who would be interested in playing at this event. They had never had a teacher band enter before.
Bonilla got a good response, and Ed and the Educators were born. And they had so much fun that they decided to start playing professionally, which they have done for the past two years.
The band, whose ranges from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin to Johnny Cash, consists of Bonilla, Paul Griley (English) on bass, Craig Pearce (track coach and PE) on drums, and Clint Menasco (alternative education) on guitar.
When Bonilla isnt playing music, hes working on a novel about a teacher who has an anxiety disorder, which makes him afraid of germs.
He has to grade his papers with rubber gloves on, said Bonilla, who is working on the book for a third summer. Its nearly complete, he said.
