The B Foundation headlines the 2008 Surf Roots Tour when it stops Friday, Aug. 8, at Whiskey Dick’s Saloon.
With the 2008 Surf Roots Tour, one California band is establishing its presence in South Lake Tahoe.
The B Foundation is returning to Whiskey Dick’s less than six months after its first show there. The headliners of the Surf Roots Tour will join Ballyhoo, Lavish Green and the Daniel Wesley Band at the saloon Friday, Aug. 8.
“We draw really well in Reno, so a lot of those people will drive down to Tahoe to see us play,” bassist Jason Moorehead told Lake Tahoe Action in March.
“We’ve never had a bunk show in Tahoe,” said Moorehead, whose band made its Whiskey Dick’s debut with the Itals on March 21 and played one of the first shows at Bar 24 inside Bill’s Casino. “Let’s put it that way.”
The B Foundation mixes rock and reggae, and has toured with legends Barrington Levy and Eek-a-Mouse in addition to supporting the likes of Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, Long Beach Short Bus, the Voodoo Glow Skulls, Fishbone and the English Beat.
“We’re more the alternative rock-reggae-surf kind of thing,” Moorehead said.
The B Foundation was still working in new guitarist Tyler Lewis into its lineup and getting ready to tour Japan the last time the band was due to play the South Shore. Since then, Moorehead, Lewis, drummer Ian McGrath and guitarist/vocalist Pat Stevenson released the limited edition “Bee Sides” in June. The B Foundation had targeted August as a possible date for a new release.
“There was an exponential leap from the first album to our second album, and we don’t want to let people down,” Moorehead said.
Ballyhoo! is on the road from Aberdeen, Md., in support of the release of “Cheers!” in March. According to the band’s Web site, guitarist Howi, drummer Big D, turnatbulist Blaze and Mista J have been mixing modern rock with reggae, punk, ska and island music since 1995. Ballyhoo! tours the country in a pimped-out conversion van the band calls “The Green Room.”
The band’s 2006 album, “Do it For the Money,” has sold 6,000 copies, and prompted 14,000 downloads on iTunes and Rhapsody.
“We’ve been playing for so long, it’d be weird to stop now. ‘Do It For the Money’ has really opened a lot doors for us and has spread like wildfire in the underground,” frontman Howi Spangler said. “I can’t wait for people to hear the new stuff: We’ve really taken what we’ve done in the past and built on top of it, adding more edge to the rock songs and more melody to the reggae. This record’s got rock, reggae, acoustic, and even some power ballads.”
Venerable South Shore band Lavish Green fits right in among a lineup that melds hard rock with good-time grooves. No doubt Rolling Stone was too busy and self-important to review “All 4 You,” the band’s 2008 tribute to the members’ families, but Lake Tahoe Action called it top-shelf.
“Personally, it’s the best thing I’ve ever been a part of,” Chris Sanchez told Action in January. “I am extremely pleased with the product.”
More recently, Lavish performed at the Song Fest benefit in June and the South Shore’s Earth Day celebration in April.
David Wesley emerged from Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2007, finishing in the top five of the Fox Seeds Contest, which the city’s biggest rock radio station sponsors. Wesley and his band released their sophomore effort, “Sing + Dance,” spawning the single “Ooo Ohh,” which became the most requested song of the year in Vancouver, according to a news release. Seven sold-out shows followed, and Wesley & Co. capped the year by selling out Commodore Ballroom in five minutes for the Santa Fox Ball.
The David Wesley band combines rock with reggae and the influence of the beach and is riding the wave down the West Coast.
Resin Music started the Surf Roots Tour in 2006 with shows up and down the California coast. The B Foundation has headlined the tour before, as have Common Sense, Slackstring, Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds, OPM, Chapter 11 and Sashamon. Tour highlights have included the U.S. Open of Surfing after-party in Huntington Beach, Dive & Surf’s D-Man Festival and the Reggae by the Bay Festival in Long Beach.
This year’s tour comprises 42 shows in 15 states. The Surf Roots Tour promotes a positive lifestyle and environmental consciousness, and past beneficiaries have included Heal the Bay, the Surfrider Foundation, Life Rolls On, Surfers Healing and the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society.
