J.P. Chadom Jewelers Inc. is closing its doors. Owner Joey Chacon said after
22 years in the business, it’s finally time to retire.
“I’ve been working for 55 years, and I think that’s enough,” he said.
Chacon said the closeout sale started Friday and will continue until 80 percent to 100 percent of the merchandise is gone. Everything needs to be liquidated. Prices are marked down by as much as 60 percent.
Before starting his business, Chacon worked in the casinos for 28 years and took one year off when he retired from that career. By the end of that year, he wanted to open up a jewelry store.
“I got bored not working with people,” Chacon said. “People are the highlight of my life.”
Any customer who has dealt with Chacon could tell you that he’s social and has a robust sense of humor. Looking back on the store’s history, Chacon said he’ll miss the camaraderie working with his clients — and laughing with them as well.
“I get excited creating jewelry for them,” Chacon said. “I enjoy creating the heaviest, highest-quality jewelry.”
And Chacon has worked with quite a number of people. He estimated that he has seen 4,000 to 5,000 people come through the store and watched three generations of family members return to the store.
He also has worked with the likes of Pete Rose and Tiger Woods. Chacon said
he played golf with Woods before he became a legend in the sport.
In September 1993, he played a round with Woods and Heather Graff in the American Junior Golf Association’s Lake Tahoe Classic at Genoa Lakes. Chacon
has the 14th hole named after him, since he shot a birdie on the hole that day. At the time, Chacon had no idea how successful Woods would be.
After the store closes, Chacon plans to do some golfing, fishing and spending time with his grandsons and great-grandkids.
The store is at 109 Kingsbury Grade, Suite 2F, in Kingsbury Station. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call (775) 588-3855.

Thrift store having its grand opening
Bargains Galore: A Thrift Store and More is holding its grand opening Saturday.Owners Lynda and Lynn Shauer said the store offers clothes, linens, books, sporting goods, furniture and kitchenware. Part of the store’s profits will be donated to the Emily Clothier Foundation.
The store is at 972 Tallac Ave., Suite B, behind Taqueria Jalisco and Rojo’s, and next to Napa Auto Parts. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Tuesday. Call (530) 541-0444.
Chamber events
The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is hosting a “Keeping GreenHere” presentation from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the chamber office, 169 Highway 50. Reservations are required.
