Tails were wagging, butts were sniffed and the slobber was flying as the new South Lake Tahoe Dog Park made its debut Monday morning at Bijou Community Park.
This is the best; it takes the load off Taylor Creek, said Mike Lee, a longtime South Shore resident and first-time dog owner, as his 2-year-old Doberman pinscher frolicked with a black-and-white collie mix. We needed this.
The nearly 40,000-square-foot fenced-in facility features benches, separate areas for large and small dogs, doggie drinking fountains and mutt mitts for the messes left behind.
With his older dog, Bullet, standing in his shade, South Lake Tahoe City Councilman Jerry Birdwell echoed Lees statements. Im proud to be on the council that made this a reality, he said as he looked for his other dog, Kiva.
The project is one of several at Bijou Park, with improvements under way at the skate park and possible changes planned for the disc-golf course.
This is the least expensive, best thing weve (the council) done for the community and dog lovers, Councilwoman Kathay Lovell said. It was a 5-0 vote.
Judging by the turnout of approximately 100 people with 60 dogs, a dog park is needed indeed.
Gary Moore, parks and recreation director, announced conceptual plans to bring a dog water park to a designated portion of Regan Beach next year as the popular area is being remodeled.
