Chris Klug didn't touch the football that often for the South Tahoe Vikings on Saturday, but when the senior receiver did, it was bad news for the Wooster Colts.
Klug caught two touchdown passes from Willy Ervin and returned a punt 65 yards for a third score as the Vikings won their homecoming game for the third straight year, beating Wooster 27-7.
"One of the ultimate experiences in high school is to come out on your home field on homecoming and win a football game," said STHS coach Chris Morgan. "My hat is off to all the people that came out to watch us today."
In the large crowd were alums dating back to 1958.
"It's always a big inspiration for me, knowing that our alumni is coming back," Klug said.
The Vikings' first win of the season evened their Sierra Division record at 1-1.
South Tahoe was mostly content to wear down the Colts on the ground as Eric Taylor and Tyler Lastiri combined for 128 rushing yards. But it was Klug who made things happen against the Colts.
In the first quarter, Klug's leaping 18-yard touchdown grab in the corner of the end zone enabled the Vikings to overcome a holding penalty that wiped out a Garrett Tinlin touchdown reception on the previous play.
Taylor's three-yard touchdown plunge gave STHS a 14-0 halftime lead before Klug broke Wooster's back by weaving through the Colts en route to a 65-yard punt return touchdown early in the third quarter.
"Did you see that block by Mike Burns? That is the only thing that sprung me," Klug said.
A 66-yard punt return by Klug set up the Vikings' first touchdown and a block in the back penalty wiped a 50-yard return by Klug early in the second quarter.
Yet, the Colts kept kicking to the Vikings' breakaway threat.
"If it was me, I would have tried to keep it away from him as much as possible," Morgan said.
Klug punctuated his performance by breaking a slant 81 yards for a score midway through the third quarter, putting the Vikings ahead 27-0. He finished with two receptions for 101 yards.
"He is a serious dimension that we need on the offensive side of the ball," Morgan said. "Teams have to account for him, which opens up other stuff for us."
A 30-yard touchdown reception by Anthonie Wright allowed Wooster to avert a shutout. The Vikings held the Colts to 24 yards of total offense in the first half.
"They are a running team, and that is what our defense is made to stop," said senior linebacker Gary Prescott, who was part of two of the Vikings' four quarterback sacks.
South Tahoe (1-4 overall) plays at Bishop Manogue on Saturday afternoon.
