Another round of wintry weather is here

A blast of northern cold air will make the second weekend of October at Lake Tahoe seem like the middle of January, with temperatures expected to plunge 40 degrees below average today and Saturday, and snow accumulations of about 3 to 4 inches.

The storm will be short-lived, but the wind and cold “will be enough to take a bite” out of the traditionally fall-like Sierra weather this weekend, said Rudy Cruz, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Reno.

High temperatures today could hover around freezing, with low temperatures expected to plummet into the single digits tonight. It will be about the same on Saturday afternoon, with highs between 30 and 40 degrees with night-time temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees.

As with any early storm of this magnitude, it will be a good idea to drain the sprinkler system and make sure water pipes are covered, Cruz said.

Area ski resorts are hopeful this cold snap — along with last weekend’s steady rain — are signs of things to come.

A light dusting of snow remains at Kirkwood Mountain Resort’s highest points following last Saturday’s rain and snow showers. Now, with the added cold this weekend, the future looks promising, said Kirkwood spokesman Daniel Pistoresi.

“Last weekend’s storm left a nice white blanket to accent all the fall colors. But this next storm could be our first legitimate chance for snowfall this season,” he said.

Meanwhile, any chance to get a foundation going for Sierra-at-Tahoe resort would be very much welcomed, added spokeswoman Kirstin Cattell.

“We hope this signals cold temperatures and lots of snow coming our way this winter,” Cattell said. “We depend on Mother Nature for our 480 inches of annual snowfall. And if it starts today, we will be happy.”

Any pre-winter weather sets a solid foundation for anticipating a great season, said Heavenly Mountain Resort spokesman Russ Pecoraro.

“We take these events as great opportunities to get people to start thinking about skiing,” he said. “It’s a great reminder that summer is over and it’s time to start thinking about buying season passes and planning vacations.”

Sunday temperatures will show a gradual warm-up. Highs are expected in the 40s with lows in the upper 20s. Monday’s high temperature should be in the upper 50s.
