Whittell girls get revenge on Dayton

The Whittell girls' soccer team was hoping it would avenge last year's playoff loss to Dayton on Oct. 2. But after the two teams tied, the Warriors had to wait until Saturday to exact revenge on the Dust Devils.

Lyric Amsterdam had two goals and two assists, while Sasha Rupp scored three goals as Whittell defeated Dayton 5-1 in a nonleague game in Zephyr Cove.

"We just crushed them," said WHS coach Tony Cormier. "The girls came out and played about as a well as they could have. If we play like that the rest of the season, I don't seeing us lose very many games."

Whittell went up 1-0 in the first half when Samantha Rupp cross a ball to her sister, Sasha, who one-timed a shot past the Dayton keeper. The Warriors scored four goals in the second half, including another one assisted by Samantha Rupp as they improved to 10-4-2.

Dayton's best player, Erika Garcia, was stifled by the Whittell defense. Garcia scored two goals in her team's 4-3 Northern 3A regional playoff win over Whittell in 2007.

"We're on a roll right now, and we just have to keep taking it one game at a time," Cormier said. "We're in a good spot at the moment."

The Warriors host Spring Creek in a nonleague game on Friday in Zephyr Cove, then resume league play on Oct. 21 against North Tahoe.

Galena boys shut out Vikings

The Galena boys' soccer team scored on a penalty kick in the first half, then scored a late goal in the second to post a 2-0 Sierra League win over South Tahoe on Saturday in Reno.

With only four games remaining in the regular season, the Vikings (4-11-1 overall, 3-7 league) will likely miss the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.

"It was a really tight game, but this is the first game where we didn't hang our heads after we got scored on," said STHS coach Chris DeLeon. "We controlled the game and brought it to them. I am proud of these boys and how they have matured. They've been playing well - and maybe it's a little too late - but it's something to build upon."

South Tahoe continues league play on Wednesday when it travels to Fallon.

STHS, Galena battle to 0-0 tie

The South Tahoe and Galena girls soccer teams battled to a 0-0 tie during a Sierra League match on Saturday in Reno, a result that has the Vikings tied for first place in the league standings.

"It was a real defensive battle throughout the game, and it was a good game by both teams," said STHS coach Clint Lockhart.

South Tahoe is 13-1-4 overall and 7-0-3 (24 points) in league. After Douglas' 6-0 win against Damonte on Saturday, the Tigers move into first-place tie with the Vikings at 8-1-1 (24 points).

The two teams meet on Saturday in South Lake Tahoe. Next up for South Tahoe is a league game against Churchill County on Tuesday in Fallon.

WHS-Dayton boys soccer game called

The Whittell boys' soccer game with Dayton was called on Saturday because referees said they lost control of the game. The Warriors, who beat the Dust Devils 3-0 on Oct. 2, were trailing 1-0 in the second half when the game ended.

Whittell (8-8-2) hosts Loyalton on Wednesday and Spring Creek on Friday.
