Regular customers of the Keys Cafe likely have noticed two new faces there.

Azzy Soave and Joe Soave became the new owners of the cafe in August.

The opportunity was perfect for the couple to own their first cafe, because the original owner did a great job with the building and the menu, Azzy Soave said.

They were both familiar with the cafe, too. Joe Soave said he used to go there to grab a breakfast sandwich on the way to hit the slopes in the winter.

The cafe is almost tucked away from the view of passers-by on Highway 50, so it is mainly frequented by locals. The bike trail is right next to the cafe, making it a perfect place to grab something to eat after biking on the trail, such as a smoothie, or a sweet potato sandwich with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, balsamic vinaigrette and mixed greens, Azzy Soave said.

The couple want to keep the funky vibe of the cafe, but with some slight changes. For example, Azzy Soave wants to turn the place into a dessert house in the evenings.

"Tahoe doesn't have a lot of places you can go after dinner besides the bars or the casinos," she said.

The shop also features local artists' work, and has free WiFi, Joe Soave said.

Besides serving breakfast, soups, salads and sandwiches, the Soaves also offer catering through the cafe, such as office breakfast or lunches.

The cafe is at 2279 Lake Tahoe Blvd., No. 2, near the corner of James Street and Tahoe Keys Boulevard. It's open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Call (530) 542-3800 or check out tahoekeyscafe.com.
