Measure G backers can’t wait for election results

School board member will gather unofficial data at polling places

Members of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board and some local officials will pool together today as poll-watchers and have created a Web site that will record unofficial tallies from South Shore elections.

The idea for the Web site came about in the June 3 election for the school bond Measure A. School board members canvassed each of the polling places moments after the polls closed. When the tallies were posted at the polling places, Measure A backers were able to determine that the school bond had been defeated before the official ballot count.

School board member Larry Green suggested again watching the polls, but for this election, he will put the unofficial results up on a Web site.

Others have expressed interest in the other elections and asked Green if the group could post unofficial results from the South Lake Tahoe City Council and Lake Valley Fire District contests.

“The point of doing this is that we can have the information up as soon as possible regarding who is winning, who appears to be winning and whether Measure G is winning,” said Green, a mathematics instructor at Lake Tahoe Community College.

At first, Green considered using an Internet wiki — a collaborative Web site set up to allow user editing and adding content — to post the unofficial information. But he thought Internet users may find a site more helpful and easier to navigate.

“We didn’t want to have a Measure G party, yet we wanted a place where anyone can go. I’m sure a lot of people will be curious,” he said.

Election results will be posted as soon as they come in tonight and can be found here at www.tahoedailytribune.com.
