2 arrests in Halloween probation operation

A Halloween night effort to monitor sex offenders and “other high-risk offenders” on probation in South Lake Tahoe netted two arrests, according to a statement from the El Dorado County Probation Department.

Members of the department visited the homes of about 15 probationers “during the hours children are typically out trick-or-treating” to check if they were in compliance with the conditions of their probation, according to the statement.

Both arrests were for drug- or alcohol-related probation violations and did not involve “any contact or new offenses against minors,” according to the statement.

Steve Heggen, deputy chief probation officer, declined to give the names or previous offenses of those arrested.

Forty registered sex offenders live in South Lake Tahoe, according to the California Attorney General’s Office.

The Halloween checks are “an annual event planned by the Probation Department to prevent and reduce criminal activity and promote the safety of El Dorado County by enforcing court orders,” according to the statement.

A 23-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of a controlled substance after allegedly breaking into a female friend’s apartment.

The woman was not at her home in the 700 block of Tallac Avenue when a neighbor reported the break-in at about 3 a.m. Saturday, according to South Lake Tahoe police Sgt. Shannon Laney.

Officers arrived and found the man leaving the scene on a bicycle with a white bag containing some of the woman’s belongings, Laney said.
