The last time the Whittell High girls soccer team of Lake Tahoe and Spring Creek met, the Warriors were on a six-game winning streak, including wins over 3A Sagebrush League teams Dayton, Yerington and Fernley.
It will be a different situation today when the two teams meet at 2 p.m. in the first round of the Northern 3A regional tournament in Spring Creek. The Warriors, the No. 4 seed from the Tahoe League, have lost four of five games to end the season, a tailspin that started with their 3-1 loss to the Spartans on Oct. 17 in Zephyr Cove.
The first time we played them, our heads were a little swollen, said WHS coach Tony Cormier. We had just come off a bunch of wins and felt like we were invincible. Spring Creek came into the game ready to play and we came into it thinking we were going to win just by showing up. Hopefully, the roles are reversed this time.
Sagebrush League champion Spring Creek hasnt overlooked many opponents this season.
The Spartans went undefeated in league (10-0) and havent lost in more than a month. But Whittell has been determined to qualify for the state tournament since its first-round regional playoff loss to Dayton last year.
The girls are pumped, Cormier said. I can guarantee that we will be ready this time. Every single girl on the team has their hearts in this game and want to win it bad. If we play like we are capable of, theres no reason why we cant go all the way to state.
With the top teams in this weeks regional tournament advancing to state, the Warriors will need to upset Spring Creek today, then beat the North Tahoe-Fernley winner on Friday in the regional semifinals. Whittell (11-7-2) split its two matches with both Fernley and North Tahoe during the regular season.
Depending on the outcome of todays other first-round games, the semifinals and finals will be played at either Lowry, Whittell or Incline.
