The South Tahoe High volleyball team played with intensity, emotion and fire to win the annual battle of the South Shore over crosstown rival Whittell 25-21, 25-13 and 25-16 on Tuesday.

In front of a raucous crowd of fans from both schools, the Vikings overcame first-game jitters in a dominating victory over their Nevada rivals.

“The girls were nervous in the first game,” STHS coach Meghan Reid said. “We’ve never had a crowd like this. The girls prepared the whole year for this.”

The sweep concluded an up-and-down season for South Tahoe, which ended with a respectable 12-13 record in the tough 4A Sierra Division. The win also knotted the overall series with Whittell at five wins apiece and ended a five-match Warrior winning streak.

“It was great to give the seniors a last hurrah. We played our hearts out for them,” junior hitter Rachel Kaufer said. “The crowd gave us that much more motivation.”

The Warriors, who will be defending their five-time 2A state championship beginning Friday in Lovelock, began the match looking like their winning streak would continue. Behind the strong net play of junior Isabel Concha-Foley and serving of freshman Darby Reeder, Whittell jumped out to an 11-1 lead. Senior Jackie Lopez kept the Vikings close with several dominating kills as the Kasey Roberts-led defense rejected everything Whittell hit at them in the narrow South Tahoe victory.

The second game was tight, with both teams trading points early. Freshman Megan Mize served Whittell within a point at 10-11, but the Warriors never got any closer. Seniors Chelsea Madsen and Caroline Baghdikian dominated the game at the net, with Kaufer adding to the Vikings’ power attack.

Despite the 2-0 lead, there was still plenty of spirit coming from both sides of the gym. “Overrated!, overrated!” yelled the Vikings’ faithful at the 10th-ranked Warriors. “We’re in the playoffs!” responded the Warrior crowd.

With their backs to the wall in the third game, Whittell changed their lineup by inserting freshman Nina Jimenez as setter to try and increase their hitting power. The efficiency and poise of South Tahoe was too much, as the Vikings cruised to the three-game sweep. As Lopez recorded a kill to give the home team a 22-13 lead, the Viking faithful chanted; “Start the bus! Start the bus!”

“The seniors really earned it,” Reid said. “Jackie (Lopez) and Chelsea (Madsen) really stepped up. Caroline (Baghdikian) was awesome with her blocking.”

In the end, it was the experience, power and depth of the Vikings that gave the Californians their first win over Whittell since all these players were all in middle school and ended their season on an ultimate high note. For Whittell, the tough test in front the hostile crowd should prepare them for the challenging playoffs ahead and has them looking forward to the exciting renewal of this great rivalry next year in Zephyr Cove.

Kaufer led the Vikings with eight kills, followed by Lopez with six. The six-foot tall Baghdikian had three blocks and Madsen recorded two aces. Kasey Roberts had 16 digs with Erica Kolari contributing five digs. Whittell’s statistics were not available at press time.

South Tahoe won the JV match 25-19, 25-14.
