Elle Vermillion and Tess Braun helped the UC Santa Cruz womens soccer team win an NCAA Division III tournament game last week.
The former South Tahoe High players enjoyed a 2-1 verdict over Redlands in the opening-round of the tournament last Saturday. Vermillion, a sophomore keeper, made seven saves. Braun played a reserve role.
The Banana Slugs, however, ran out of steam the next day in losing to Claremont College 4-0. Vermillion had two saves for the Banana Slugs, who finished with a 12-7-1 record.
Vermillions team aims for title defense

The Gauchos opened pool play with games against Penn State and Baylor.
Abravanel at UC Davis for NCAA game
Leon Abravanel, a member of South Tahoes 2003 state champions, will be at UC Davis on Saturday for an NCAA tournament soccer match.
Abravanels Denver Pioneers (10-6-2) will open the 48-team NCAA mens tournament at UC Davis (12-4-4) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Sweet revenge for Garratt, Trojans
Trojans junior linebacker Nick Garratt of South Lake Tahoe assisted on a tackle in USCs 45-23 victory over Stanford last Saturday.
The victory avenged a startling loss to the Cardinal last season in Los Angeles.
Woods bedevils Butler
Butlers womens volleyball program has probably seen enough of Jessica Woods for the season.
The outsider hitter from Whittell High had 19 digs and 12 kills as Wright State University rallied for a five-game road win last Friday. The sophomore also provided a block assist, two assists and a service ace.
Woods delivered a crucial kill with Butler at match point, 24-22, in the third game. The kill was part of a 5-1 Raiders run that gave them game three, 27-25. Wright State won the next two games to win the match.
Woods, however, struggled the following night at second-place Valparaiso, collecting only two kills in 15 attacks as her team lost in three games.
Wright State enters this weekeds Horizon League tournament as the third seed and will play Cleveland State in the quarterfinals on Friday. A match with Valparaiso looms in Saturdays semfinals.
Cornell finished fourth in Ivy League
Jordan Reeder capped her freshman volleyball season at Cornell with 14 digs as the Big Red won their final two Ivy League matches last weekend.
The Whittell product had six digs, one kill and one assist in a five-game victory over Harvard last Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. Reeder contributed eight digs and two assists as the Big Red dispatched Dartmouth in four games on Friday. Cornell ended the season with a 10-15 overall mark and 9-5 in the Ivy League.
Vath starts second sport
Freshman Karli Vath has appeared in three of Northwest Christian womens basketball teams first seven games. The former Viking, who also played soccer for the Beacons, has made the only shot she has taken. Northwest Christian has a 4-3 record.
Mels team wins Western regional
Mel Lawrence and the University of Washington womens cross country team followed up their Pac-10 championship with an NCAA Western Regional title last Saturday at Stanford.
It was the Huskies first regional title in 16 years.
The top-ranked Huskies, with Reno High grad Lawrence placing fourth (20:03) in the 6K race, ran away from second-rated Oregon for the second straight meet. Top team scores were Washington 25, Oregon 62 and Stanford 91. Washington will be the favorite to win the NCAA championship on Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.
