The fire that started in the Fallen Leaf and Lake Tahoe areas near Angora Ridge this afternoon has been contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The fire was called into emergency dispatch at around 2 p.m. South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, the Forest Service and Lake Valley Fire Protection District responded.
No structures burned.
At about 2:30 p.m., the Leaf fire was reported to be roughly 1 to 1-1/2 acres and holding, and identified as being on land managed by the California Tahoe Conservancy, said Rex Norman, spokesman for the Forest Service.
The area was described as being near to, but just outside the area of the 2007 Angora fire. The area was also described as having had hand treatments as part of a fuels reduction project, and this may have contributed to the lower rate of fire spread being reported, Norman said.
By 3 p.m., the incident commander at the fire began releasing units and declared the it contained soon after, Norman said.
The crews are mopping up the incident. The cause of the fire is being investigated. Smoke had been reported in the area after pile burns were done in the area about three weeks ago, he added.
“Occassional smoke was seen because of pile burns and the area was being patrolled,” Norman said. “Until an investigation is completed they (fire officials) won’t declare an actual cause of it.”
